The NOAA Climate Program Office (CPO) is part of NOAA Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR). CPO supports NOAA mission-driven climate research by working across NOAA and by engaging the external community primarily through annual Federal Funding Opportunity. CPO’s Earth System Science and Modeling (ESSM) Division programs (AC4, CM, CVP and MAPP) support climate and Earth system research to improve climate understanding, modeling, prediction and applications across multiple Earth system science disciplines and timescales. The ESSM Council is established to provide individual comments on ESSM science opportunities and strategies, through consultation and information exchange with ESSM.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together key CPO partners and stakeholders, both internal and external to NOAA to discuss CPO’s climate and Earth system research priorities and partnership strategies over the next 1-5 years around the following questions:
- What can the external climate research community bring to advance NOAA’s climate mission? Similarly, what can NOAA labs and centers offer to the climate community?
- What is the unique role of CPO/ESSM competitive research programs in terms of climate and Earth system research priorities, considering the key climate science challenges and opportunities, the core capabilities and gaps in NOAA labs and centers, and CPO’s research program scope?
- What’s the optimal strategy for CPO programs to facilitate coordination and partnership within NOAA and with the external community?
To allow for in-depth discussions, this workshop will focus on the three topics: 1) climate research to enable societal resilience to extremes, 2) climate research to inform coastal and marine ecosystem management, and 3) linking observations to process understanding and model improvements. These topics were selected based on i) OAR/labs’ inputs regarding their gaps/needs that can benefit from collaborations with the external community or with other NOAA entities; ii) CPO’s research program scope and iii) NOAA’s priorities.
The expected outcome: The workshop organizing committee will draft a report based on discussions of these three topic areas and will seek feedback from all participants. The report will be used to inform CPO future research priorities and partnerships strategies in these topic areas. The report will also identify topics of future workshops such as this one and topics for potential joint research initiatives with multiple partners.
