California-Nevada RISA Develops Nevada Climate Assessment

The California-Nevada Climate Applications Program (CNAP), a CPO Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) team, recently developed a quick climate impacts assessment—the first formal state climate assessment for Nevada—for Nevada's Climate Strategy that was released last month. The Nevada Climate Strategy was developed in response to an Executive Order from Governor Sisolak. CNAP researchers worked with Dr. Kristen Averyt, Nevada’s new State Climate Policy Coordinator, Dr. Steph McAfee, Nevada’s State Climatologist, and other Nevada researchers to develop the climate assessment. In particular, the assessment covers heat, drought, snow loss, flood and wildfire risk changes associated with impacts to public health, water resources, habitats, recreation and hospitality, and agriculture and ranching. CNAP built the assessment’s format and information based on experience with and evaluations of other assessments. The team is now working with Extension and Nevada state officials to develop public-facing communication materials about the assessment.
