New research funded by CPO’s MAPP Program focuses on drought in the central U.S./Great Plains region and evaluates why summer droughts occur in the Southern Great Plains during some La Niña years but not in others, and how several drought indicators may promote drought preparedness during future flash drought (droughts that intensify rapidly) events.

A new CVP-supported paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research explores variability in ocean salinity and how that variability is connected to air-sea interactions, large-scale ocean circulations, and climate phenomena such as the MJO and ENSO.
A new study supported by AC4 and published in Science of the Total Environment explores the biophysical implications of future human settlement expansion. Reinmann et al. use EPA’s Integrated Climate and Land Use Scenarios model to project changes in Massachusetts through 2050.

New research funded by the Climate Program Office’s Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections (MAPP) Program indicates that the potential for high-resolution coupled (atmosphere-ocean) modeling to improve seasonal forecasting of tropical cyclone activity may be greater than previously believed.
“There is little doubt that we will see a decline in Arctic sea ice cover in this century in response to anthropogenic warming, and yet internal climate variations and other external forcings could generate considerable spread in Arctic sea ice trends on decadal timescales,” begins a newly released article by Yeager et al., in Geophysical Research Letters.
