The Northeast Urban RISA welcomes Anna LoPresti as its new Sustained Assessment Specialist. LoPresti will join a small network of assessment specialists who synthesize research findings and information about adaptation activities in their region as ongoing input to the National Climate Assessment and relevant regional processes. The MAPP Program will host a webinar on Wednesday, July 31, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. ET on our program and new funding opportunities. This webinar will describe the MAPP Program, including our research focus areas and partnerships inside and outside of NOAA, our new competitions, and the process for applying to our competitions. The CPO ESSM Workshop and Council Meeting was held in Civic Center in Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland on November 20, 2019. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together key CPO partners and stakeholders, both internal and external to NOAA to discuss CPO’s climate and Earth system research priorities and partnership strategies over the next 1-5 years.

Pacific RISA fostered an inspiring conversation between His Excellency and representatives from Hawai’i state and local government, international consulates, NGOs, and academia.
In the summers of 2017 and 2018, citizen scientists in Richmond, VA, the District of Columbia, and Baltimore, MD, gathered temperature data all over their cities on days when temperatures reached at least 95°F. The results, as outlined in a NOAA article from 2018, show that air temperatures in some areas of the city can be up to 17°F hotter than other areas during the same time of day. On days when local temperatures climb above 95°F, the additional heat emitted by paved and concrete structures can produce dangerously hot temperatures in some neighborhoods.
