Flash drought can quickly deplete soil moisture and dramatically increase evaporative stress on the environment, leading to significant impacts on agriculture. A recently completed study, supported by CPO’s Sectoral Applications Research Program, performed a regional analysis across the United States to explore geographic differences of flash droughts.

The workshop is part of an initiative developed by the Wilson Center, UCAR, and NOAA, to improve predictive capabilities for security risks posed by extreme weather- and water-related events.
The purpose of the workshop was to review climate events and impacts of the 2019 water year, provide forecast information for the upcoming water year, and learn about new resources on drought and climate variability.

From November 19-21, CPO’s NIDIS is hosting two upcoming meetings for the Midwest Drought Early Warning System in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Attendees will share and discuss ongoing drought activities, learn about new and innovative drought research and resources, explore emerging issues and opportunities, and identify collaborative paths forward for the CA-NV DEWS network to continue to help the region monitor, forecast, plan for, and cope with the impacts of drought.
