Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) program, a core project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), held their Science Steering Group’s 36th annual meeting (GEWEX SSG-36) from April 22 through 26 in Budapest, Hungary. Ginny Selz, program manager for the Climate Program Office (CPO) Climate Variability & Predictability Program, presented NOAA and CPO activities and priorities related to the WCRP’s new lighthouse activity, the Global Precipitation EXperiment (GPEX). NOAA’s Precipitation Prediction Grand Challenge aligns with many GPEX focal areas outlined in the newly drafted Science Plan, aimed to improve precipitation predictions limited by major gaps in observing, understanding, and modeling precipitation. This meeting and WCRP lighthouse activity offer an opportunity to coordinate, engage, and leverage international efforts to support PPGC goals.
