The upcoming American Meteorological Society (AMS) annual meeting, with “Earth System Science in Service to Society” as a guiding theme, will see many presentations by CPO staff, demonstrating the breadth and mission-orientation of CPO’s programs and integrated information systems.
Dr. Rick Spinrad, NOAA’s Chief Scientist, addressed participants of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP) 21 and international viewers in a video presented at the US Center.
On November 12, CPO’s Hunter Jones joined over 30 urban climatologists, architects, planners, and emergency management & public health practitioners to address an estimated 200 audience members, in New York City for the symposium: “Extreme Heat: Hot Cities – Adapting to a Hotter World.”
By participating in this forum, Juli Trtanj (OAR/CPO) represented NOAA’s interests in the implementation of the Global Framework for Climate Services through Clim-Health Africa.
Given the very strong El Niño event and its likely persistence for several more months, the Western Water Assessment, a NOAA RISA program at CU Boulder, hosted a panel of local experts from NOAA ESRL and the National Weather Service on Friday, Oct. 23. Juli Trtanj (OAR/CPO) will serve as a key resource person at a national capacity building initiative for climate and health in New Delhi, India from 22-24 September 2015. Trtanj will present a global overview of climate services for public health to an interdisciplinary group of scientists (climatologists, meteorologists, epidemiologists, public health and social development experts) at a workshop hosted by TARU Leading Edge, the Indian Meteorological Society, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The overview will include a briefing on the concepts behind the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) and outcomes from the recent NOAA-lead Workshop on the Development of Climate Information Systems for Heat Health Early Warning in Chicago, including future heat health system pilots and research collaborations with India. The briefing will also include updates on NOAA’s collaborative efforts in water and vector-borne diseases, highlighting our vibrio forecasting work with the NOS Ecological Forecasting Services, and our work on cholera early warning in Bangladesh. Coverage of NOAA’s other international efforts with health connections, such as NWS/NCEP’s international work on monsoons, and our involvement with the Global Framework on Climate Services and the Group on Earth Observations will also be included.

Juli, as well as Michelle Hawkins (NWS), attended a High-Level Knowledge Leadership Exchange Forum on Heat Health and Climate Preparedness in New York City on September 16th.The knowledge sharing and relationships from this forum will support expanded engagement between NOAA and domestic and international partners as we develop the US National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS).
